More than 700 Carolina Forest acres set aside for conservation
“The Pennsylvania-based group works on projects across the country, but it has focused on the Southeast because of the region’s growing population and comparatively low rate of conservation. In Carolina Forest, the land trust has shown a strong interest in protecting the Carolina Bays, the elliptical freshwater wetlands found primarily in North and South Carolina.
The bays are what led the land trust to help Grigg’s company set up the conservation easement for the 715 acres, said Stephen Johnson, president of NALT.”

Conservation Easements
A look at NALT Conservation Areas found in communities of South Carolina: the Reserve at Lake Keowee, Palmetto Bluff and the Balsam Mountain Preserve. “Not many communities seek out this kind of environmental protection, but those that do provide enriching experiences that will last several lifetimes. Kim Reardon is building a second home at the Preserve, and thought she was a beach person until she visited for the first time. ‘When I saw those views, it just took me away,’ she explained from her home in Savannah, Georgia. ‘I was amazed that there was the potential of being able to preserve land like they have done,’ she said. ‘I didn’t realize I was a conservationist until I came here.'”

Balsam Mountain Preserve Purchases Land Under Conservation Easement
“The acquisition [of 2,000 acres under conservation easement with NALT] will allow the Balsam community to utilize the easement to its fullest potential, including eco-education opportunities for residents and scientific studies managed by the Balsam Mountain Trust, a non profit 501 c3 resident on the property, in partnership with both local and regional groups. Often described as a ‘community within a park,’ Balsam Mountain Preserve is set on 4,400-acres of which seventy five percent is under conservation easement, making it the lowest density residential community in the Southeast.”

Horry County conservation groups collaborating to preserve land
“A group that has become more active in local preservation [in Horry County] in recent years is the North American Land Trust, a nonprofit that helps landowners obtain conservation easements for their property. In 2017, the land trust assisted in preserving nearly 145 acres, including about 50 off River Oaks Drive, records show.”

Silo Ridge Ready to Build
“…the open space easement with the North American Land Trust is underway. He explained that the brooks and wetlands need to have more cautious easements but that the golf course and utilities areas are completed. The open space will be a total of 535 acres. ‘Regarding the conservation easements, they are currently under review by the planning board and we hope to have these completed by next week. Once that review is completed they need to be submitted to the Town Board for their review and approval. The easements will be broken down into two easements. One, the Natural Areas Easement, which will be much more restrictive, and one for the Golf Course open space which will allow for such use. Once the easements are completed and approved, we would then be in a position to file and record the subdivision plat with the county.'”

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden accepts major land gift from Hanover family
A major step in the family’s overall preservation efforts came in December 2012, when the family secured a conservation easement on the land through the North American Land Trust, ensuring the property that is about 10 miles northwest of Short Pump Town Center will never be developed. ‘We were very happy to find somebody like Lewis Ginter that would take care of this garden and preserve these azaleas.'”
