President
Steven W. Carter is the President of North American Land Trust (NALT). With more than 23 years of conservation planning and nonprofit management experience, Steve is passionate about preserving natural lands, historical resources, ecological restoration, and community engagement. Since 2001, he has helped manage the successful completion of more than 550 conservation projects across twenty-four states.
Steve works with government agencies, municipalities, major corporations, private landowners, and non-government organizations to permanently conserve and protect natural lands and open space. He has spoken at national environmental conferences, and he helped NALT launch conservation projects in 12 U.S Army Corps of Engineer districts.
In his first year as President, Steve created and led a strategic coalition of government agencies and private donors that raised more than $4 million to acquire and preserve seventy-two acres of the Brandywine Battlefield. The acquisition was completed in 2021 and NALT proudly opened “Brinton Run Preserve” in 2022 providing public hiking trails at the historic battlefield site. In 2024, Steve led the organization through the successful completion of the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO) rigorous Standards for Excellence® accreditation program, demonstrating NALT’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of organizational ethics and accountability.
Steve earned a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University, where he majored in natural resource management and minored in forestry. He proudly serves on the Board of Directors for the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy and the Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates. Steve and his wife, Elisabeth, have three wonderful children. When he is not preserving natural lands, Steve volunteers in his local community and enjoys fostering rescue dogs.
