Palmetto Bluff describes a 22,000 acre property located just southwest of the town of Bluffton, and east of Hilton Head Island, in coastal South Carolina. Found just behind South Carolina’s line of barrier islands, including Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Bluff is itself an old barrier island. Its front consists of a line of parallel dunes and interdune swales with small wetlands, and the rest of the tract is flat pinewoods interspersed with wetlands and hardwood stands. Three conservation easements have been donated on this spectacular property located on the banks of the May River in the Broad-St. Helena Watershed, a designated Outstanding Water Resource. The Conservation Areas contain a roosting area used by the federally endangered wood stork and is adjacent to a nesting site annually used by the federally endangered bald eagle. The Conservation Areas also protect portions of designated buffer zones surrounding these two endangered species locations. These conservation areas have significant conservation value in regard to the maintenance of biological diversity in South Carolina. Significant public benefit will be derived in terms of natural resource protection.
